(Plane to me) - i would like to know what module/hardware i can use to put on my rc plane that will be able to send me back data (height, GPS, altitude etc) over a distance of about 1 km (0.65 miles) line of sight.
(Me to plane) - Also, what module/hardware i can use to send control commands to plane to control it (i wont need to send alot of data seeing as i need to control around 4 servos and a motor)
Realistically speaking, i probably don't need to transfer more than 1 kbs of data from the plane to myself (even that is possibly generous) seeing as i'm only transferring numerical data from sensors. I will have a different transmitter for the video, unrelated to the arduino seeing as sending video is not plausible, that will be attached to the plane.
My main concerns are these:
Find such a piece of hardware at a cheap price (talking lower than 25$ for both transceiver receiver - if such a thing is not possible i would be happy to know about it and what is the cheapest i can get, i don't want to go expensive because these planes can get lost/gunned down by squirrels)
Arduino library exists for the transmitter/receiver.
i have found a module i think is good enough for controlling the plane (Me to plane), not sure if it is good enough for receiving data from plane, seeing as i don't think it can send a lot of bits.
Natures warning sign is that if the project is as cheap/easy as you indicate, everybody would already be doing it. Your best bet is read and ask questions in the DIY drone forums.
wow thanks didnt think about such a forum, i will look at it
however, the question itself still stands, im sure someone has some knowledge about sending data at such distances, and i was expecting a "Oh here is a module i used.." or a "nope, its gonna cost more". i just want the minimum hardware to make this work, and i do believe it can be easy, as long as some one has written a library for it already
HM-TRP modules are frequently used for telemetry with RC aircraft. You should be able to find a wealth of information on their use in that respect, but I'll spoil it for you and just tell you that it should meet your price and range requirements.
Chagrin:

Thanks alot! i have searched on many forums yet i always saw xbee modules or some other exensive stuff, this really is what i needed! answers all my requirements, all the best
I would advise caution. This isn't a project for an amateur. There is risk involved and possibly bodily injury if you loose control of the aircraft and it hits someone. You could be facing a law suit. I suggest you do all your initial testing in a remote location where you are not overflying innocent bystanders.
