I noticed that while I’m composing a post, I can continue to read the topic, which is great!
Can I use the search function while I am writing a post?
And what happens when I accidentally click a link, will I lose my post? Should I be saving copies of my post locally just in case?
Yep, just use the search icon on the right side of the top toolbar. You can navigate around the site, quote other posts, etc… and the new post window will remain open at the bottom of the screen.
When you submit the reply (and/or new topic) it will post to the proper location – though if you have navigated away, it will prompt you to make sure you’re on the correct topic, first:

It’s also worth mentioning that we periodically save server-side drafts of your posts in the background, automatically, while you’re writing it.
So you can even close the browser, turn off your computer, drive across town to an Internet cafe, log in… and pick up right where you left off composing your post!
Note that the editor can be minimized with the down chevron at the upper right. I’ll do that now as I write this reply…

The draft window will stay docked at the bottom until you click it again. So be sure to peek at the bottom of your browser if you think you have a draft in flight.
Drafts work for new topics as well as replies. You can have as many reply drafts as there are topics, but we only keep one new topic draft at the moment.
