Considering the role of AI in AAC - an interesting discussion with Craig Smith, and AssistiveWare's David Niemeijer and Erin Sheldon at Apple last month. 💬 When AI assists augmentative and alternative communication, guiding the process and reducing the possibility of mistakes, to what extent is the voice still yours, and how much belongs to the algorithm? 🍎 This was one of the questions explored in my discussion with David Niemeijer and Erin Sheldon of AssistiveWare when we sat down together at Apple last month. 📲 You can watch the full conversation, ‘Building communication success for autistic children with Proloquo’, by registering at this link: https://lnkd.in/ghZ9e94T

One of the most inspiring aspects of Agosci Inc was being part of a beautifully diverse community: AAC users, their families, therapists, and educators, all coming together to share, connect, and learn. AssistiveWare’s team: Amanda Hartmann, David Niemeijer, Erin Sheldon, Irene Hunter, and Shannon Braithwaite attended many inspiring and thoughtful presentations. We also delivered 4 days of non-stop hands-on workshops and presentations, sharing our ideas, experience, and research findings. We were also proud to sponsor and support Jordyn Zimmerman’s participation, whose keynote sparked incredible engagement and meaningful conversations. Jordyn also led a powerful session in our room on busting myths around regulation and AAC. And, of course, a screening of “This is Not About Me” reminded us why we do what we do: to push for a more inclusive world. Emily Seoud and Michaela Coleman; two teachers from MUDGEERABA SPECIAL SCHOOL presented on how they integrated communication in teaching the curriculum. It truly stands out to us how the Australian AAC community is so dedicated, not just to communication, but to actually teaching AAC users the curriculum. For those of you who live in other parts of the world, if you are thinking about visiting Australia, consider timing that so that you can attend the next #AGOSCI, which will be in Brisbane in two years. We’re so grateful for all the feedback, great discussions, and lovely dinner conversations we had with thought leaders and AAC users. Till next time!
