Implementing Cisco Networking Solutions

Networks for Digital Enterprises

"The world is changing very fast. Big will not beat small anymore. It will be the fast beating the slow."
- Rupert Murdoch

We all live in a world today where the boundaries between the physical world and the digital world are blurred. Today's world is more digital than physical, where even the machines have networking requirements. This digitization has helped create opportunities and has great promise to change our everyday lives.

In this chapter, we will discuss the following topics:

  • The requirements for changing business models on the underlying network infrastructure
  • The enabling technologies for digitization
  • Cisco's architectural framework (Digital Network Architecture)
  • Different aspects of the network infrastructure

The impact of technology on business

The world is changing, and changing fast. We have seen so much technological innovation in the last decade that we might not have witnessed in the previous century. This rapid growth has impacted all spheres of our lives, and has changed the way we communicate and interact with other people, even machines; it has changed the way we conduct business with our partners and customers; it has changed our lifestyles, changing the definition of luxury and necessity.

We have seen conventional business models being toppled by new innovative business models; for example, Uber is changing the way we have recognized the taxi industry for centuries. We have seen an evolution of highly profitable new companies that own minimal assets, for example, online shopping giants such as Alibaba, Amazon, e-bay, and Airbnb. There has also been a change in the way new...

A digital-ready infrastructure

"It is not the beauty of a building you should look at; it's the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time."
- David Allan Coe

Enterprises need to build on a foundation that can help innovate at speed, keep up with change, and prepare them for what can come in the future. Digital transformation requires a digital-ready infrastructure, which is simple, intelligent, automated, and secure. There are multiple elements of the digitization infrastructure of an organization as we will see in Figure 1 next. We can broadly classify the infrastructure into three parts:

  • A host of input and output systems that interact with the human world. This would include IoT systems (such as wearable sensors, the sensors in vehicles, homes, and manufacturing plants), mobile systems, CCTV cameras, and environmental sensors.
  • The underlying...

Facets of a digital infrastructure

We have discussed how networks should behave, and the services that a network should deliver for a new age IT infrastructure. This section talks about network design requirements and the various characteristics that should be considered while designing and implementing a network. Most of these have been the basic guiding principles even before the digitization wave, which shows that these principles have stood the test of time. A network that has to meet the requirements of a dynamic organization, however, has new principles that need to be considered such as agility and programmability. This section focuses on the different parameters that can be used to measure the effectiveness of the network design.

Cisco Digital Network Architecture

Cisco has been at the leading edge of networking and enabling its customers to adopt technologies that help them prepare for the future. In the wave of digitization, SDN, NFV, cloud adoption, analytics and orchestration, Cisco has come out with an architecture called the Digital Network Architecture.

Cisco's Digital Network Architecture (DNA) is an open, extensible, software-driven architecture that accelerates and simplifies your enterprise network operations. The fundamental principle of DNA is to enable a software-centric network infrastructure that can be changed to meet business needs.

Cisco's DNA delivers the same consistent experience to wired users, wireless users, and remote VPN users, and uses advanced analytics to provide rich insights into the network.

Cisco's DNA is based on the following key pillars:

  • Virtualization...

Summary

In this chapter, we discussed the changing role of networks in a digital world, the various challenges faced by networks because of dynamic business environments, and how networks can be adapted to these challenges by using a structured approach to network design.

We looked at the different characteristics of good network design and what they mean from an operations perspective.

In the next chapter, we will delve deeper into how to accommodate the desirable characteristics while designing the network. We will cover the different parts of an organization's IT network and discuss the functions of each part of the network before we drill down into each part individually in later chapters.

Key benefits

  • Implement Cisco's networking solutions on datacenters and wirelessly, Cloud, Security, and Mobility
  • Leverage Cisco IOS to manage network infrastructures.
  • A practical guide that will show how to troubleshoot common issues on the network.

Description

Most enterprises use Cisco networking equipment to design and implement their networks. However, some networks outperform networks in other enterprises in terms of performance and meeting new business demands, because they were designed with a visionary approach. The book starts by describing the various stages in the network lifecycle and covers the plan, build, and operate phases. It covers topics that will help network engineers capture requirements, choose the right technology, design and implement the network, and finally manage and operate the network. It divides the overall network into its constituents depending upon functionality, and describe the technologies used and the design considerations for each functional area. The areas covered include the campus wired network, wireless access network, WAN choices, datacenter technologies, and security technologies. It also discusses the need to identify business-critical applications on the network, and how to prioritize these applications by deploying QoS on the network. Each topic provides the technology choices, and the scenario, involved in choosing each technology, and provides configuration guidelines for configuring and implementing solutions in enterprise networks.

Who is this book for?

This book is targeted at network designers and IT engineers who are involved in designing, configuring, and operating enterprise networks, and are in taking decisions to make the necessary network changes to meet newer business needs such as evaluating new technology choices, enterprise growth, and adding new services on the network. The reader is expected to have a general understanding of the fundamentals of networking, including the OSI stack and IP addressing.

What you will learn

  • Understand the network lifecycle approach
  • Get to know what makes a good network design
  • Design components and technology choices at various places in the network (PINS)
  • Work on sample configurations for network devices in the LAN/ WAN/ DC, and the wireless domain
  • Get familiar with the configurations and best practices for securing the network
  • Explore best practices for network operations

It is more academical that practical. Good resource for student, but not for professional who is on the field or production.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
