Functions of a data center

A DC is the core of the enterprise network. Most enterprise network communications have one end of the communications within the DC. This is because the DC hosts most of the enterprise applications that are accessed by a majority of the users. These applications could be core business applications, or business supporting applications such as email applications.

The DC also hosts the major databases within the organization. Most of the organizational data is stored in databases such as SQL, RDBMS, Oracle, and so on. These databases require large computing and storage resources and skills to manage and maintain the databases. Centralizing these databases helps to contain the operational costs of the organization.
