SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE – DRIVERS
• The drive of virtualisation
• Commoditisation
• High bandwidth networks
• Doing “things” in the cloud
• Improve availability and scalability
• Cost savings
• Focus on bespoke business applications
THE LURE OF SERVER VIRTUALISATION
CUSTOMER ONSITE CHALLENGES
• Performance and stability
• Single points of failure
• Balance utilisation
• Integration with other infrastructure
• Storage & backups
• Networks & security
• Skills shortage – virtualisation requires specialist skills
• Business risk – businesses are reluctant to put mission critical
servers on virtual servers
WHAT IS INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE
Wikipedia:
• Cloud infrastructure services, also known as "infrastructure as a
service" (IaaS), deliver computer infrastructure – typically a platform
virtualisation environment – as a service, along with raw (block)
storage and networking.
• Rather than purchasing servers, software, data centre space or
network equipment, clients instead buy those resources as a fully
outsourced service.
• Suppliers typically bill such services on a utility computing basis; the
amount of resources consumed (and therefore the cost) will typically
reflect the level of activity.
INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE (IAAS)
IAAS –WHAT IS IT?
Service Detail Who Why
Self Provisioning Portal MSP Access to service
Creating new virtual machine Customer Easy to use
Selecting memory and CPU Customer Flex to meet app requirements
Selecting storage type & volume Customer Deliver IOPS, i.e. disk speed
OS & App licenses Customer /
MSP
SPLA licenses for OS
App license = customer / SPLA
Scalable infrastructure MSP Provision new servers & additional
storage instantly
Flexible infrastructure MSP So customers can change
performance instantly
Resilience & security MSP To remove single points of failure
Centralised & internet facing MSP To provide easy user access
USAGE SCENARIOS
Usage Scenarios
1. Use for development, production or DR environment
2. Use for mission critical apps
3. Use for centralised apps
4. Use for short-term / fluctuating requirements
5. Use for new projects where the customer wants to avoid CAPEX
6. Use for customers who are looking to provide 24x7 Internet facing
service, but don’t have expertise on providing a scalable & available
infrastructure
EXISTING CUSTOMER REFERENCES
1. Top 20 legal company use our service for their high-availability SAP
estate as well as other servers
2. Top 10 insurance company use it for their most mission critical app
3. UK wide construction business uses it for their Exchange platform
4. Major retailer uses it for all network domain controllers, email and
application servers
5. National professional services firm uses it to host Microsoft ISA
and Citrix servers
SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE (SAAS)
COMPONENTS OF SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE
• Infrastructure as a Service
• Managed OS
• Patching
• Anti-Virus
• Server deployment
• Server monitoring
• Software Layer
SAAS – DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT
Why Document Management in the cloud?
• Collaboration internally and externally
• Access from anywhere
• Key requirement in many sectors such as legal or insurance
• Complete cloud based service
• Protected across multiple data centres
• Utility computing
• Built-in DR
SAAS– MICROSOFT SHAREPOINT
• Most organisations are dogged with the same issue – how to quickly
locate the information they need in the company file share.
• SharePoint enhances search & makes it easier to share information
• Today’s work occurs over multiple locations, whether in different
countries, offices, departments or at home.
• SharePoint enables teams to work together to share and access
business information from virtually anywhere.
• Going with a hosted SharePoint 2010 solution saves customers from
purchasing costly servers and wrestling with hardware and licensing
issues.
SAAS OFFERING – VDI
• Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a key growth area and key
incentive for customer to move into the cloud
• It reduces the cost of providing desktops, applications and back
office services to users.
• A hosted desktop appears and performs exactly like a regular
desktop PC, but the software and data you use are hosted in a
secure data centre and delivered to anywhere on any device
• Through a hosted VDI solution customers experience the latest
server /desktop infrastructure
• Each hosted virtual desktop is immediately available and additional
power, software and features can be easily added on demand
SAAS OFFERING – MICROSOFT EXCHANGE
• Key platform but commodity
• Upgrade to Exchange 2010
• Issue around onsite availability vs 24 x 7 access
• Focus on integration with other apps
• Centralised and access from anywhere
• Built in DR by using high availability design across to two data
centres
• Patching and upgrades
SUMMARY
• IaaS provides the foundation for SaaS
• SaaS is the next stage for cloud computing
• Built around key business applications
• Access from anywhere
• 24 x 7 availability
• Built-in DR
