OVERVIEW – HUNTER WATER
CORPORATION
ArcGIS Utility Network Migration - the Hunter Water Story
Our network consists of around 1.7
Million connected features in the GIS
Hunter Water provides drinking,
waste, storm and recycled water
services to over 600,000 people
across the Lower Hunter
OVERVIEW
Migrate from an end-of-life product to a modern
supported system – ArcGIS Enterprise
Maintain existing functionality on a new platform –
Utility Network
Support the implementation of the FSM Program -
IFS
ArcGIS Utility Network Migration - the Hunter Water Story
THE IMPORTANCE OF DATA QUALITY
The Utility Network is built on a foundation of data quality rules that maintain the integrity
• There are in-built data quality rules (geometries and attributes)
• There are 5 categories of Utility Network rules that define the relationships that are allowed between features
in the network
• Data quality issues will result in ‘dirty area errors’
• Utility Network Rule non-conformances e.g. line A cannot
connect to point B
• Poor data quality e.g. self-intersecting lines
• Importantly, these errors can stop key functionality from working
Esri’s best practice states:
For a properly functioning utility network
the error count should be as close to 0
as possible.
Error counts greater than 10,000 have
severe performance and functionality
implications.
ArcGIS Utility Network Migration - the Hunter Water Story
CHALLENGES – CONFIG ERRORS
• Reflux Valves are
directional. The
upstream side is
configured in the data
model
• The lines are assigned
to a terminal of the
valve. (Inlet / Outlet)
• In this example, the
terminal assignment is
incorrect. The
subnetwork (purple
line) is not able to
continue past the
valves.
• No errors are
generated.
ArcGIS Utility Network Migration - the Hunter Water Story
CHALLENGES – TOPOLOGY ERRORS
• System Valves are placed on top of
each other
• Topology error 25: Stacked point
Features detected
• "Error" Dirty Areas created (Red
striped boxes)
• The update subnetwork process will
detect these errors and
the subnetwork will not build.

UN Readiness UN Migration UN Validation
Source Data Asset Package
Get your existing data fit and
ready for migration into ArcGIS
Utility Network (UN). The UN is
built on a foundation of data
quality rules – if your data isn’t
clean, it will present many
errors in the system and hinder
your progress.
Data-driven schema
transformation. Move your
data from its current format
into your Utility Network
target model. By utilising the
Asset Package, we can
iterate until we're confident
to go-live.
Ensure that no data quality
issues have been introduced
during the migration and
check against the UN Rules.
It is much easier to capture
and fix any issues before
publishing data into the Esri
system.

Recap: Harnessing Data Integration
Project delivered:
● Data Readiness for UN Migration
● FME enables the GN & UN to exist side by side
● Data is maintained in a single location
● Legacy Applications remain unaware & unaffected of the
migration.
● Lowers risk by enabling sequential cut-over/remediation of
existing applications.
● Support newer applications and users with UN
