This paper discusses the optimization of the array factor (AF) pattern in a 49-element active planar phased array experiencing up to 20% element failure using particle swarm optimization (PSO), an evolutionary algorithm. It highlights the importance of EAs in recovering degraded array patterns without expensive repairs, presents various recovery cases, and emphasizes the effectiveness of PSO due to its simplicity and computational efficiency. A dedicated software tool was developed to facilitate the optimization process and evaluate the results against original AF patterns.
