This document discusses using particle swarm optimization (PSO) to optimize the array factor pattern of an active planar phased array after antenna element failures. It presents results from optimizing the pattern of a 49-element quasi-circular array with up to 20% element failure. PSO is used to calculate a new set of input amplitudes for the functional elements that recover the original pattern levels for the main beam, first side lobes, and first nulls. The results show PSO can effectively recover the pattern in cases with 1, 3, 5, and 10 non-functioning elements.
