Prereq Check You should have already completed Intro to Blogging.  So this means that you…. Already have a  purpose  for your blog (an electronic newsletter, a diary of classroom happenings, a place to help students find additional information, a showcase of student work, or for student blogging through responses) Have completed a PPS Blog application Remember: Creating a blog without a  clear idea  of  why  you want to do it, is like writing a book without a topic.
Where to Get Help http:// edublogs.org /videos http://movies.atomiclearning.com/k12/wordpress  (username: it; password: pps) http://edublogs.org/forums/ TRTs are able to help you with  basic  blog questions as well.
Blogging Basics Blogs have two sides Public (what is viewed) Administrative (controls what is viewed) Blog content can be shown in two ways Links - text you find on a Web site which can be "clicked on" with a mouse, which in turn will open a file Embedding - integrating a copy of data from one application into another  Blogs have limited storage space
Logging in to your blog Go to your blog Click “Log in”
Logging in to your blog Username – Firstname_lastname Password: emailed to you
Welcome to Your Dashboard
Blog Themes provide blogs with a distinctive “ look and feel ”. You will be able to  customize  your blog by choosing a theme. A theme also determines: How many columns & sidebars (1 or 2) If you can insert widgets If you can upload  your own  header banner 2 columns,  1 sidebar right,  No  custom header 4 columns,  3 sidebars(on right) Custom header 2 columns,  2 sidebars right, custom header 3 columns,  2 sidebars (left & right) No  custom header
Change the Look & Feel To choose your blog’s theme, select “Design” from the top menu. Scroll down and select the theme you would like to have for your blog.  You can change it at any time!
Widgets and Sidebars The sidebar of your blog allows you to embed  lots of interactive widgets and feeds from all over the internet! Sidebar widgets are updated automatically making your blog look fresh  Your audience and purpose will help you decide which widgets you want
Widgets and Sidebars The sidebar can also have standard entries which you can activate:  Recent Posts  -  Tell visitors what you have blogged about recently  Blogroll -  link list to your favorite blog writers blogs Categories -  Divides your posts into more manageable “folders” Search window -  Visitors can search for anything in your blogposts! Post archives  - Links to past posts Subscription option  –Get a following Meta data  -  Allows you to log into your blog link to your blogs feed
Adding “Stuff” Your turn - Add more flavor to your page with widgets. Select “Design” and “Widgets” to add elements to the sidebar columns of your blog.
Posts Posts usually appear on the  Frontpage  (start/home page) In  reverse chronological  order A link to comments (If you click on this you will also see a comment form at the bottom of the post).
Pages You can have  dedicated places  for more static information (info that does not need to change often -  About Me ,  Our School ,  Student of the Month ) It makes it  easier  for visitors to find dedicated information.
Adding Posts & Pages Select “Write” from the top menu. Click on “Post” or “Page” Use the “Visual” editor (Unless you need to use HTML)
Linking to Media Click media tab – Choose the type of media Choose “From Computer” Remember there is limited storage space  Videos take the most space
Embedding A File Click Media Gallery Choose “From URL”
Add Tags A tag is a coding statement that describes some aspect of the contents of a Web page. The information that you provide by tagging a post is used by search engines to index a page so that someone searching for the kind of information the page contains will be able to find it.
Add Categories Using Categories is a method of organizing blog content into logical groupings. Categories represent a summary or list of content that can be found on your entire blog.  People who come to your blog may only be interested in finding certain content.
Save or Publish? There are several options: Save – to work on it later or publish at a later date Publish – to put out on your blog immediately  Keep post private (you can also password protect posts)
Editing Posts & Pages Select “Manage” from the top menu to edit, delete and manage all previous posts and pages.
Comments Click on comments Individually moderate or bulk moderate
