Thanks! My informal solution is indeed to store pieces of paper in the boxes that refer to aisle and shelf numbers in a store room! So we're on the same lines!
But I don't usually add this when writing about the analogy since with every analogy, you need to stop somewhere!

I like the storeroom idea. If some storage bins are locked, you have immutable data.
