PHP String rtrim() Function
The PHP String rtrim() function is used to return strip whitespace or other characters from the end of a string. This function accepts two parameters as argument. Without the second option, rtrim() will strip the following characters −
" " is the ASCII SP character 0x20 represents an ordinary space.
"\t" represents the ASCII HT character 0x09, which is a tab.
"\n" is the ASCII LF character 0x0A, representing a new line (line feed).
"\r" represents the ASCII CR character 0x0D, which is a carriage return.
"\0" refers to the ASCII NUL character 0x00, also known as the NUL byte.
"\v" represents ASCII VT character 0x0B, a vertical tab.
Syntax
Below is the syntax of the PHP String rtrim() function −
string rtrim ( $string, $charlist )
Parameters
Here are the parameters of the rtrim() function −
$string − (Required) It specifies the string to be checked.
$charlist − (Optional) It specifies which characters are to be removed from the string. If $charlist parameter is not provided, the following characters will be removed: "\0" - NULL, "\t" - tab, "\n" - new line, "\x0B" - vertical tab, "\r" - carriage return and " " - ordinary white space.
Return Value
The rtrim() function returns the modified string.
PHP Version
First introduced in core PHP 4, the rtrim() function continues to function easily in PHP 5, PHP 7, and PHP 8.
Example 1
Here is the basic example of the PHP String rtrim() function to return strip whitespace from the end of the string.
<?php $input = "Hiii Sumit"; echo $input . "\n"; echo rtrim($input,"Sumit"); ?>
Output
Here is the outcome of the following code −
Hiii Sumit Hiii
Example 2
In the below PHP code we will use the rtrim() function and remove whitespaces from the right side of a string.
<?php $input = "Hello World! "; echo "Without rtrim: " . $input; echo "\n"; echo "With rtrim: " . rtrim($input); ?>
Output
This will generate the below output −
Without rtrim: Hello World! With rtrim: Hello World!
Example 3
Now the below code uses rtrim() function and remove the characters '!', '(', ')', ' ' specified from the end of the input.
<?php $input = "Tutorials point. !!! (( !!))"; echo rtrim($input, "! ()")." (simply easy learning)"; ?>
Output
This will create the below output −
Tutorials point. (simply easy learning)
Example 4
In this example we will remove numbers and some punctuation marks (1, 2, 3, ,, .) from the end of the input string using the rtrim() function.
<?php $input = "Learn PHP easily123,."; echo "Original String: " . $input . "\n"; echo "Modified String: " . rtrim($input, "123,."); ?>
Output
Following is the output of the above code −
Original String: Learn PHP easily123,. Modified String: Learn PHP easily
